VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.

A VPN provides secure access network resources over the internet and allows you to connect to a remote network and become a node on that network. In our case, our VPN is a private network located in the United Kingdom and thus makes your computer become part of a UK based network on the internet.

VPNs use tunnelling, encryption, authentication, and access control over a public network at the same time for security. Although they often use public networks, VPNs inherit the characteristics of a private network, thus they are referred to as a "Virtual" Private Network.

VPNs create "virtual" point-to-point connections using a technology called tunnelling.

As the name suggests, tunnelling acts as a "pipe" which passes through a network to connect two points. The tunnelling encrypts the data into packets and encapsulates it for safe transmission across the internet.
